233 words. PG. Post-series. Written with one pairing in mind but probably applicable to at least two that I can think of or possibly even three.

Unravelling

She held the puzzle in her hands; old hands, wrinkled and occasionally spotted with the discoloured patches of age. A puzzle that once solved would give her unimaginable pleasure. But how could a puzzle do anything like that?

She’d never tried to solve it. This strange polished box that one day, long ago, a laughing demon had placed into her hands.
He was dead now or so she’d heard. Dead like all the rest of them. So how could it hurt to play with a silly toy now?

Sliding her fingers over the panels, feeling them click readily into place. Slowly unravelling, piece by damning piece. Each polished panel so reflective that she feared that should she hold it close enough; it would show her, her own aging face.

He’d always promised her horrors and pleasures in equal measure. Always dangling such tantalising promises just beyond her reach. Temptation incarnate or so he’d always been to her. More forbidden, more mesmerising, more destructive than anything she’d ever encountered before or since.

The pieces slid aside more easily now as if gathering momentum. Would it work? Would it truly bring her ecstatic dissolution?
The last piece slid into place.
Nothing.

She was just an old woman sitting alone in a patch of sunlight. Clutching a memory in her hand. And if she closed her eyes; she was sure she could hear him laughing.

Granted, that might not have been the real Lament Configuration but someone's evidently done a good enough job of pretending it is. And though I initially had one pairing in mind, I can probably think of at least two that would readily fit.

Ah, too bad. I've been hoping Pinhead would appear in the last second to do... Pinhead-like things. I can see two pairings, too; for once, of course, Dietrich and Esther. The other being Cain and Edith. Which is really cute, too, though sort of sad, considering her Prince died and now, with his technology or control thereof gone, she is not only lonely, but also aging. I love her temptation, though, now considering it's Esther. That's the really beautiful thing about her and Dietrich. The temptation just doesn't seem to ever die completely.

I hadn’t considered Cain and Edith but that fits quite tragically too. I was thinking of Isaak and Caterina for the second one or possibly even Seth and Cain much further down the line. Unfortunately the only candidate I can see for inter-dimensional malarkey at the moment is Radu and that’s just because I’m picturing him getting slapped by Hephaestus. And I may have something or other to say about the relationship between Dietrich and Esther at a later date but right now all I can pull together is that it seems equal parts fascination from both sides.

I like the Isaak-Caterina one even better than Dietrich-Esther. Or well, rather I like the played-for-a-fool-aspect better. While in the DE-version, I like the temptation itself. I'll be waiting for that, then. And Radu being slapped by Hephaistos? How/Why that?

Because Eris and Hephaestus are playing chess with people again and Eris is winning. She’s managed to use one of her pieces to not only get rid of two of Hephaestus’ but also trick one of his other pieces into helping with that. Though Hephaestus’ problem is that Eris piled all her attribute points into Dietrich when creating a character for the chessboard where as he tried to split his evenly between Radu, Seth and Süleyman.
Eris also cheats. And that’s even before anybody takes into consideration that Aries is playing an entirely different game and pretending to be human while moving Cain around the board.

For some odd reason I was thinking Caterina and Isaak all the way through. ._. Weird. But I like Herit's choice up there, Dietrich and Esther seem to fit it better, for sure.

I really need to sit down and watch those movies. I've only seen snippets from when my brother would watch them.

They were the second pairing I thought of, though Seth and Cain was the potential third.

The Hellbound Heart seems to be the story the films were based on. And I’m kicking myself over not having realised that Clive Barker was responsible for both that and Nightbreed because they’re actually rather similar, though the Nightbreed game was seemingly impossible to complete.

Really? o.o Wow. Seth and Cain? Now there's something I'd like to see written. :D

Aha, I'll have to find that too. I've heard of Nightbreed, but that's about all. XD Aww, don't kick yourself to hard ._. You'll bruise your ass

He was the elder brother that she’d always adored and whom she willingly followed into battle against the people who had inflicted upon them so much pain. Even later when many years had passed and she herself had chosen a different path; she’d couldn’t help but think of him. How’s that for a short ad?

*-* Lovely. >< It's like the teaser trailers of a video-game you want so bad that it makes even your insides want to squeal.
