Oh nice. Excellent phrasing/pacing/rhythm/something on this one. Still not quite awake enough to reply, but awake enough to appreciate it.
I'd say it doesn't have to be quite AU, in the sense of "know thyself" they each need to explore their darkest side and be aware of it so that they can make sure it does not it does not catch them off guard or creep up and take over while they're unaware.
