The issue is, of course, nothing to do with the inalienable chain of command. That stands. Granted, it is changeable, through the correct process, and so help you god, if you think otherwise. And there's a considerable amount of pandering to egos and ideologies that must occur if you are to climb it. You cannot just skip a step and, for the sake of fandom examples, crown yourself king of Asgard. You must be designated heir first. And that is, of course, eminently achievable. Easily, steadily, securely, you can climb. The trick there is to advance your superiors in the process, and not make of yourself too good a lieutenant, that they cannot afford to lose you. That's hardly the problem. It's the sort of thing that comes naturally, with time and patience and the sort of eager lies that poets ought to write odes about. Advancement is not, in the slightest, the problem.
Contrast to that, a lack of advancement, when one is placed over you can also be a fairly simple exercise. Especially when there is every reason to believe that they do not know what it is that you're doing, what you're meant to be doing, at any rate. Then the question becomes a matter of diligent support. It seems simple enough to say that whoever it may be will manage simply because they have been placed into that position. Very easy to presume that they possess all the qualities required. They might. But, what they'll inevitable lack is support. And, regardless of their position vis-à-vis yours, there is, in fact, a world of things you can do to undermine them. This isn't even limited to hostility either. Hostility would be the most obvious problem, when a simple absence of information or outright cooperation will do just as well. A lack of action, not action against, is enough to leave them floundering. Why yes, he did say he was going to Jötunheimr, was I meant to have done something about it? A clueless absence of catching what, really, you could have done.
Moving directly, of course, doesn't have to be direct anyway. Down that route lies the path of circumventing. Still acting and moving forward but leaving the centre still and really a little pointless. More a case of stasis than outright ejection of the piece that doesn't fit. Of course I wouldn't want to bother our new king, let me handle that, he has other matters to attend to. There is a German classic, possibly something by Hoffmann that I never knew the name of, about the servants holding power over the master, simply because the master doesn't know how to perform any of their tasks. Everything in its place. So this path is simply a matter of holding still.
Lastly, in confrontation, is simple argument. Discord and strife, until one or the other breaks. Until, either the newcomer digs their heels in and sweeps away all the old ways, or, leaves in defeat against something most unreasonable. Of course the mad scramble for power overrides all else: did you expect a warm light for all humanity to share instead?
A plethora of ways to circumvent or challenge or, in eloquent simplicity, fail to heed the call when most needed. None of which, at the current time, is anything more than a theoretical exercise. And this isn't, in fact, anything to do with fandom. After all, the ultimate aim is progression, and I am a very cheerful liar.
