Single Malt Scotch

Marks & Spencer do a little gift selection of 3 different single malts, and since I don’t actually know much about whiskey, or scotch in particular, it seemed as good a place as any to start.
Islay
The blurb on the bottle describes this as ‘oily with faint costal air and distant smoke’. There’s a faint oiliness in the scent but the smoke is definitely present in the aftertaste. In fact, I’m finding that I like this straight up just to catch that aftertaste. Usually I tend to dilute any whisky I drink with coke because I find the bite a bit too much.
Highland
Beautifully warm scent with a rolling warmth drunk straight. This works wonderfully with coke as a nicely mild drink to pass the time.
Speyside
This is the region that Glenfiddich comes from so, in theory, I should know, more or less, what this tastes like with coke already. The scent is slightly sweeter than the Highland variety and the bite is fairly strong, but it all mellows out readily with the addition of coke. The aftertaste is still refreshingly strong so I can see why this is a popular mixer.
