Bush seeks to calm Russian fears BBC News
I have days when I’m torn on this. On one hand Putin is suitably sinister but on the other it’s a fairly constructivist argument of threat determination anyway, on both sides of the divide. This seems quite charming though. And I don’t care if it’s propaganda and in fact rather hope it will be instead of the absolute truth.

Ministers proposing ‘Britain Day’ BBC News
Or we could, I don’t know, pay some fucking attention to St George’s Day perhaps. If they do introduce it, they’d better not stick it in anywhere from the Winter-Spring period anyway because I have three New Years to celebrate already, about two months apart each time.

And this would be why that smoking ban is idiotic. People don’t throw up and get into fights because they’re smoking after all. I’ve yet to see a single fight started by smokers in a group simply because they were smoking and it affected them a little too much. Besides, if anybody really wanted to do anything about it, 24 hour licensing wouldn’t have come into effect anyway. It’s like the official response to casinos when we have the national lottery televised and bookies on just about every high street. Though I do wonder just which Britain the people who really are seeing all this concentrated offending behaviour are living in. Though these will doubtless be the same people who claim that if only there were no dubious substances about at all then everything would be perfect. In which case I’m sorry to break it to you but there are certain locales where certain bright sparks have built towns or at least certain areas with no form of public entertainment and those locales are either industrial areas now because nobody wants to live there or have been prey to riots over food in recent history. Attempting to control public outlet doesn’t work and especially when it’s pushed to puritan levels by people who are citing ‘yobs out there’ as some sort of straw doll to shoot at. Sanitising society simply doesn’t work, nor does producing patronising campaigns about the ills of drink and drugs. Smoking seriously harms you? Not shit, Sherlock, so does high blood pressure. Fix that first and then maybe I’ll change my mind about the less serious issues. I’m no hedonist by any means but if I can smoke and drink socially against the trade off of… not much really, then I may as well be doing that rather than going without. It’s diverging a little from the argument and into generalities of course but it’s the quality of life that matters not the quantity.
