My Persian cookbook lists this as lamb stew with limes but a little looking online seems to emphasise the lentil content, which in this case might easily be more appropriate.



The amount of lamb I used was really rather small and I added far more lentils than the recipe really called for. Likewise, lacking dried limes I used fresh lime juice instead though it does appear easy enough to make my own. I also didn’t have any saffron to hand at the time so did without.



The end result didn’t quite look like the cookbook photograph since I used microwaved chips and ate the result with pita bread rather than with Persian style rice but even without the properly fried potato it wouldn’t make a bad meal. Possibly next time I might even try an entirely vegetarian version.
