Because I can’t just go on holiday without my laptop these days, I actually managed to start a few pieces while in transit two weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the extended AU crossover that I promised here didn’t get anywhere near finished because I got waylaid by fois gras & white wine in the first instance and then realised that perhaps, just perhaps, I’d had a little too much to drink because I was using the same word repeatedly instead of going with reasonable synonyms. Then, somehow, I wasn’t quite in the mood to carry on once I got on the plane, and, by the time I actually had a power supply and some down time, I’d decided that I really ought to compare actual objectivism to the extremes in Bioshock itself first. So, right now I’m waiting on a copy of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead before I can start writing anymore. If I want to delve deeper into the ideology and show just why [character] is in the situation that he’s in then it will require research and goodness knows, I’ve never been one to rely on other people’s notes. Equally, I’d like to give myself time to be well-rested enough to write what may turn out to be a love letter to genetic research. It’s been years since I’ve actually spliced anything myself, and it sounds more thrilling to talk about than it is to actually do it in a lab, but I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get over that childlike wonder at the notion of successful gene therapy. So, that piece is on hold for as long as it takes me to do the philosophical research, which hopefully won’t take all that long.

Other than that, I really need to finish off my three-part excuse to write Holmes family background, otherwise known as evidence that I grew up watching Bond films. The first two parts are here already but the closing segment is only partially written at the moment. I’d like to get it finished before season 2 airs so that I can pretend that I’m worrying that canon will sink my battleship, but mostly I’d like to finish it before then because if I don’t, there’s a chance that I might just watch the second series and that may derail the thread of logic I had going for this piece. Canon will of course sink whatever ideas I’ve already had, because it always does, but I do still feel like I’m tying up loose ends as far as this particular fandom goes.

In the same vein, I managed to start writing another piece one afternoon last week, which actually makes ham-handed reference to The Adventure of the Reigate Puzzle. Which is incidentally, where I borrowed both a surname and a familial holding from, though I hadn’t quite realised it at the time. Of course, I’m not so straightforward as to have used Lyons as the location for anything but the transparently obvious link is there nonetheless. That piece in particular may get finished first because it’s not really about much of anything, and I didn’t have the energy to actually do my research this time by jumping on the glass floor of the CN tower, so it might well be rather truncated in the execution.

On top of that there’s the piece that was inspired by some of the stickers available for a donation at Pride this year, breakfast in bed and, subconsciously at least, the year where I missed breakfast and woke to the comment of “Either he’s dead or that was one hell of a party.” right outside my door. Of course I’m not actually moving into the Cabin Pressure fandom exactly, four fic request meme fills aside, but it seemed like the better fandom for it.

Lastly, there’s another piece that’s required looking up BA flight routes, plane types and schematics, but might easily be finished as soon as I have my brain on the right way for it. I really do just need to fill in the details for the most part and write the ending, seeing as I’ve written most of it and inserted the requisite [square brackets] where I needed to fill in specific information. Curiously, the actual plane that flies that route will give a better sense of atmosphere than the larger model that I was thinking of anyway, and is actually one of the models I recall watching taxing down the runway while I had one drink too many last Friday.
