narcasse: Sebastian Flyte. Brideshead Revisited (2008) (smug)

An island off the coast of mainland Europe, off the cost of France to be specific. With too many politicians. With people pushing for an isolationist foreign policy. With socialist workers doing things. With over-privileged students swarming through institutes of learning. With terrorism and a class system that no matter what anyone says, still exists.
Sound familiar? Can you guess the country?

If you guessed Kuchen, then you’re wrong. I’m talking about the UK. This sceptered isle, this Britannic nation, this island girt by sea.
This fucked up, anachronistic, miserable, ineffectual, gloriously pedantic, narrow-minded, backwards thinking, old boys network, refuge of the Empire.

Oh, England that you’ll neither join the EMU nor have a referendum.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

*sigh* True true. I was going to try and say something like "It isn't quite that bad, surely," but it is. Horrifyingly so.

tch.

If there was a referendum, though, I don't think I'd put a great deal of confidence in the British masses to choose well.

I’m sure there’s something I should say about the ignorant masses at this juncture but it’s not exactly their fault that they’re ignorant when the current government has declined EU ‘educational funding’ with regards to the euro several times already so any referendum would most likely turn out a no vote simply due to lack of information anyway.

Still, having met the economic criteria, I’d rather the information got out there and that referendum happened regardless of the outcome because this sitting on the vaguest of government criteria is starting to get annoying.
God, it’s just political constipation isn’t it.
