"Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took office a year ago making it clear he intended to remove what he called the church's undeniable advantages and make Spain a secular state.
There are likely to be further tensions with Pope Benedict XVI. Mr Zapatero has made it clear that he intends to streamline divorce law and even to relax the conditions placed on abortion."

from this BBC article.

Spain, I had little faith in ye. I even had the misfortune of attending Catholic mass somewhere in Malaga I believe it was, when I was younger. Don’t ask.
But well, I’m impressed. Ireland seem to want to prevent women wanting abortions from leaving the country while Spain is looking to relax the conditions placed on a woman making that decision about her own body. There’s hope yet.
For all that the Catholic church always seemed to dominate Spain, seems like Spain is prepared to fight the good fight, as it were. Now we just need some newspaper to call it a 'Crusade against injustice' and I’ll be thoroughly impressed.
