It’s all come back to this drabble again really.

Linguistics

++++++++++

In the morning when Orpherus sips his over-brewed tea he thinks about linguistics or at least linguistic fluency, mostly prompted by the vocabulary exercises that kept him awake late into the night. His English is appalling in comparison to many of his peers, in part because he never practices or pays much attention in class.

Eduard has an annoying knack of picking up English far more rapidly than anyone else other than Naoji, who is suspiciously fluent. Though Orpherus will admit that Naoji’s proficiency may be due in part to regular conversations with his sponsor who is also suspiciously trilingual.
At least Ludwig’s English isn’t all that much better than Orpherus’ but weighed out against the fact that Ludwig can mimic two other German dialects with ease, speaks French with an annoying fluency and is just as proficient in spoken and written Latin as Orpherus it’s not all that much of a consolation. Camus’ French proficiency is perhaps slightly better than Ludwig’s even, as evinced by the vast selection of French novels at his home.
Even Alberto speaks Italian fluently, when Orpherus stops to think about it.

Orpherus frowns into his tea. At least he’s fluent in rhetoric, he supposes.

Somehow I lost my comment about the Académie Française in writing this. Oh, well.

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

There are the occasional Orpherus POV things floating about, not all necessarily under the オルフェレウス tag.

Ahaha, yes, languages and linguistics, I love those two subjects. Poor Orphe. It's great to see him as human and not as perfect as he seems to be portrayed in the anime, at least superficially.

I loved the questionablemotives!Naoji bits you put in there. And Foster-san. Ha

I’m not at all convinced that the anime isn’t wonderfully subversive in highlighting Orpherus’ gratuitous batshittery all the time. It’s a sort of ‘look, this is the hero and he’s really absolutely nuts’. He personally doesn’t seem to fix anything but just manages to position himself in the right place at the right time with the perfect line for the public, which really is a skill in of itself.

I like my Naoji devious and applying that subtleness to the point of formlessness that Sun Tzu spoke of. Though of course he’s only really a novice at it compared to his sponsor.
