Or more specifically authors who cite books that they’ve yet to publish. It’s not that I mind so much but rather that it gets a little difficult to follow the trail of references when it’s yet to be created. These days more often than not I find myself reading with fingers tucked into the back of the book at relevant indices of references and bibliographic lists anyway so it’s a little unsettling to find a break in the chain because the link is not yet there. I’ve also somehow become one of those awful pedants who actually reads the introduction to see how the research is outlined and thus is going to be presented. I never used to do that and I can’t quite remember when it started sounding like a sensible thing to do.
I do suppose that that’s the point really though in regards to my prior concern, particularly in assorted research areas; to get there first and to be the one at the very edge with a new idea or direction. The path is meant to be broken under your feet because you’ve yet to construct it. You can follow the trail back and double round to look at all the old edifices once again but what you construct of that is meant to be something sparkly and new. We’re all busy constructing toasties anyway even if I have seemingly jumped ship and am trying to put myself in toastable but not yet toastie shoes to look at the matter from the outside in.
But at least I suspect that I do know somebody who may have a copy of this handy if France rears its head again. Not that I understand entirely why I can’t seem to get away from it. It’s probably like that issue of my being inexplicably dragged in a westerly direction. I’ve tried heading east but somehow I always get pulled back the other way, though I suppose that might have something to do with g-forces really.
In other news, 3500 words later I suspect that I may have just spliced Mina and Jonathan Harker together. Or I’ve just rehabilitated Renfield. Though it would really help if Isaak would stop attempting to become various literary characters. It’s bad enough that he already seems to be some variant of Charles Ryder.
