Post-István arc. Dietrich/Esther.
"For people who depend on others, do you know what the most painful thing is?"
"Naturally, for people who depend on others, the worst thing is to lose the other person."
"Wrong. It’s when the other person changes, Marionettenspieler."
Calamity

When he hears what she has become he is only mildly surprised. Of course Isaak’s taunts are not unexpected either but he bears them with peculiar disinterest.
For such a long time she has been unchanging. Not fighting to win the battle but simply to hold the line till help inevitably comes. She has been in István all this time: fighting a war that she cannot forsake. It’s fitting then that it comes full circle there: that the Star of Sorrow becomes the Star of Hope.
He’ll miss her, the girl that he once knew, the desperate soldier fighting foolishly against all odds. The girl that once upon a time he loved. Not that his love for her has changed, only that the person that he loved has vanished, just as the person he was too had faded. He has been a child hiding beneath the bedcovers for far too long; it is time for him to wake up.

“Yes.”
Dietrich smiles, unnervingly serene.

The lines come from the Wilde screenplay:
“Life cheats us with shadows. We ask it for pleasure. It gives it to us, with bitterness and disappointment in its train. And we find ourselves looking with dull heart of stone at the tress of gold-flecked hair that we had once so wildly worshipped and so madly kissed.”
