When she sat on his desk like that he knew there’d be trouble. There was absolutely no reason why she should be there and it was hardly as if he was a man who welcomed social calls during business hours.

She’d been leaning over his briefcase when he entered the room, stretched out across it at a very strange angle. It had taken him a moment to realise that he’d left the latest assignment documents for London spread out across his desk when he’d stepped out. That was what she was looking at. London assignments, London assignments in a district filled with aristocratic residences, one of which contained that-

“William.” Her sing-song rendition of his name bothered him more than his expression conveyed.

Sitting down at his desk he adjusted his glasses and decided to ignore her.

She tapped a gloved finger on a page in front of him. “I could swap with-“

“No.”

Surprisingly she didn’t argue for a change and he found that strangely disappointing. In fact she stood up and sashayed towards the door without another word. She was going to take herself off to the human world anyway.

“Goddamn it, woman! He’s no good for you!” He was on his feet and yelling before even he could figure out what he was doing.

She stopped, her back to him still and seemed to give out a half stifled giggle. Then she turned and blew him a kiss over her shoulder as she continued on out of his office.

The next time he encountered that demon wearing a human shell William was surprised to note that the woman by his side looked the demon up and down disdainfully before latching on to his arm instead. It was against protocol of course and it certainly wasn’t the sort of business image that the department were about projecting but he didn’t shake her off and settled on adjusting his glasses instead. It was justification enough that the demon actually looked somewhat crestfallen after all.
