For the longest time I didn’t understand the appeal of decaf but having all but given up coffee other than as an occasional treat I’ve started drinking decaf from time to time. It saves me from the crash after that double mocha and means that I’m less likely to end up wired for the duration of the caffeine rush, but until today I hadn’t tried decaf Starbucks anything. Today with the acquisition of a handy keyring-sized Starbucks card and armed with three free coffee vouchers, one of which I gave away, I tried both a decaf iced mocha and the decaf VIA Ready Brew.

The iced mocha was a freebie so I opted for the largest size and was surprised to find that it lacked the familiar bite that I’m use to. That said I usually order a double so it’s entirely possible that that was what I found missing. I usually also order it with soy but forgot in the process of having the, allegedly, last keyring card in the area reserved for me at a nearby branch. Unusually, either today was apparently one of the infrequent days when by body feels like tolerating milk or I did just automatically order soy and didn’t realise. Either way, I’m not usually thrilled with chilled coffees but today for some reason, possibly because I’d just made a two hour round trip involving train changes including something like a combined total of an hour’s worth of walking, an iced mocha suited me just fine. It was certainly warmer than I’d expected it to be outside and the intermittent walking had evidently done me some good so perhaps it wasn’t really the coffee in the end but my mood.

Later I tried the decaf VIA out of curiosity more than anything else because it purported to be decaf Italian Roast and the regular Italian Roast hadn’t won me over. In fact if there’d been a decaf version of the Columbia I would have opted for that. As it was, the decaf Italian Roast didn’t seem to have the edge that put me off the regular, it was smoother and less like regular instant supermarket coffee though I’m not entirely convinced that it’s worth my purchasing it in preference over supermarket decaf at the end of the day.

Now I just need to decide if I want to stick with the decaf theme tomorrow when I indulge in a free frappuccino or if I should be the odd man out in the line of chaps ordering skinny lattes with my glorified soy hot chocolate in the morning.

As much as branching of the Legacy of Kain series annoyed me Defiance has a plethora of good quotations.

Once upon a time I did drink quite a lot of coffee where ‘quite a lot’ really was ‘on the hour, every hour’ and I had all the withdrawal headaches and so on that came with caffeine addiction once I started to cut down. As a result of that I don’t tend to drink too much coffee at all these days but I do appreciate good coffee so while I did enjoy the Peet’s coffee, sadly in the end had to give a fair bit away because of the limited quantities I consume. I took some with me on a visit to friends overseas at one point and in the slow process of packing I put a container in my suitcase with a few other initial things I’d dropped in there overnight: the next day I opened my suitcase and had a glorious waft of coffee aroma. I did wrap the container in layers of clingfilm after that but it wasn’t a bad way to start my morning at least once so please be assured that the coffee was much appreciated on many levels.
